Choosing the right wood for your
woodworking (furniture) project may seem like a
daunting task, but it's actually not as hard as it
seems. Woodworking can be easy and a whole lot of
fun. The key element is the wood. Here's the
information you need to get started…
Most furniture that you buy at
stores are veneer… E.G.: Wood veneer is a thin slice
of wood cut or peeled from a log. The slice can be
as thin as a piece of paper or thick enough to
accommodate sanding and refinishing down the road.
The veneer is adhered to another wood surface.
Typically, the outer layer is made from the most
beautiful or exotic woods, while the substrate is
made from utilitarian woods or particle board (very
cheap and you can easily punch your fist through
it... This helps keep the costs down giving you a
nice looking piece of furniture!
Our furniture is made from real
wood and we specialize in pine, however, we can use
oak or poplar. For the rustic look, pine is the
best selection.
There are always at least two
viable options for any woodworking project. Pine and
oak are popular for bookcases and dressers because
of their beautiful grain patterns and superior
staining capability. Mahogany, cedar, and oak are
popular for exterior doors for the same reasons.
Birch and poplar are excellent choices for painted
projects because they are durable but take stain
poorly. The softwood and hardwood grading scales can
help determine which lumber to choose for a project,
but always visually inspect each board before making
the final call. We like pine the best
because it works well for furniture, has character,
and keeps the costs down!
